We have a real problem, especially in the US, with hating people who aren’t like us. But what about people we disagree with? Or people with different backgrounds or ethnicities? Jesus taught a little bit about that.įor if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? That’s not too difficult when our community looks like us, acts like us, thinks like us. As image bearers, we should strive for community (and unity) demonstrated by God. The three persons of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) practice perfect community. Galatians 5:22–23 We are made for community The fruit of the Spirit that we are likely all familiar with list some of the other attributes of God that we have the capacity for:īut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control against such things there is no law. Of course, we can’t love perfectly like Him, but we have the capacity to love like He does. We can be good in all the ways that He is good. We share God’s moral attributesīeing made in the image of God does not mean we are little gods, but it does mean we share His moral attributes. We will never be sovereign (as much as we try), omnipotent, omniscient, transcendent, or self-existent. As such, there will always be limitations to what we can do and how we can be like God. We are imperfect, finite images of the perfect, infinite God. It means He shares some attributes with us) and others that are incommunicable (only God has these attributes). The Bible clearly teaches that God has attributes that are communicable (Yeah, big word. They will say that we are all little gods. I want to be very clear on this point because there are teachers who will say that being made in God’s image means we have all the attributes and characteristics of God. But first, let’s look at what it does not mean. We will look at a few ways we are made in God’s image. Being made in the image of God encompasses quite a bit. It’s latin for “image of God.” It’s the idea, taken from scripture, that we are all made in God’s image and likeness. ![]() Have you ever noticed that? One of my favorite bits in a podcast I listen to involves the hosts getting called out for using fancy words and phrases when plain ones would do the job. People who study theology like to use big words. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
